Terms, in plain English

These terms are the agreement between you and Lamplight Labs LLC, the small company that makes Heirloom. The Lamplight terms come first; they apply to every Lamplight product and to your account. The terms that apply only to Heirloom — its price, its allowance, and what it can and can’t promise — are at the end. Where the two differ, the Heirloom terms win.

Who we are, and what these terms cover

Lamplight Labs LLC (“Lamplight”) is the small company behind Check This For Me, Heirloom, and Terri. These are the Lamplight terms. They apply to every Lamplight product and to your Lamplight account, and using any of our products means agreeing to them. Your card statement reads LAMPLIGHT for all of them.

Each product also has a short set of terms of its own — its price, its usage allowance, and what it can and can’t promise. Those follow these terms at the end of that product’s own terms page. Where a product’s own terms and these terms differ, the product’s own terms win for that product.

How you accept these terms

• You accept these terms, and the product’s own terms, by ticking the box when you sign in. If you don’t agree, please don’t use our products — no hard feelings.
• We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top of this page always shows the newest version.
• If a change matters, we’ll email you in plain words first. Using a Lamplight product after a change means you accept the updated terms.
• We send notices about your account — including these — to the email address you sign in with, so please keep it current.

Who can use our products

• Lamplight products are for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account.
• Lamplight products are offered in the United States only, for now. Sign-in from outside the US is turned off.
• They aren’t designed for children or teenagers, and we don’t knowingly let anyone under 18 use them.
• Keep your sign-in email safe. Anything done while signed in to your account is treated as done by you.

Payments, cancelling, and refunds

• Payments are handled by Stripe. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. Each product’s price and billing period are in its own terms and on the button you tap, and the price on the button is the whole price.
• Cancelling takes effect at the end of the current period — you never lose time you’ve paid for, and we never make you call anyone.
• If a price ever changes, we’ll email you before it applies, and it applies only from your next renewal after that email. Cancel before then and you never pay the new price.
• Because our products run on AI that costs us real money the moment you use it, we don’t refund time already used — cancelling simply stops all future charges, instantly and without a phone call. Billing mistakes (a double charge, a charge after you cancelled) are always made right.

If something breaks

If a feature of a Lamplight product stops working and we confirm the outage on that product’s Status page, every member who tried to use that feature while it was down gets a credit of one day of their plan for each such day. The credit is applied to your next bill as a balance, automatically, with nothing to fill out. Credits aren’t cash, and they don’t apply to a plan that has already been cancelled. We decide what counts as an outage in good faith, and we list every confirmed outage on the Status page for 30 days. Beyond what the law requires, this credit is the only remedy we offer for downtime.

How much you can use

Every time a product thinks, it costs us real money, so each plan comes with a generous allowance. Almost nobody reaches it. The exact numbers are in each product’s own terms, so nothing surprises you.

• We may raise an allowance at any time, and we’ll tell you before we lower one.
• When you reach a limit, the product tells you plainly and you can carry on the next day (or the next month, for a monthly allowance).

Your words and photos are yours

Everything you write, answer, or upload belongs to you. We claim no ownership of any of it, ever.

• You give us only the permission we need to run the product: to store your content, process it (including sending it to our AI provider), show it back to you, and share it with the family you choose.
• That permission ends when you delete your content or your account. Copies in our security backups age out within 30 days.
• Please add only what is yours to add, or what you have permission to share. You’re responsible for the content you bring.
• If you send us an idea or a suggestion, we may use it to make our products better without owing you anything for it — and thank you.

What our products are — and aren’t

• They use AI, and AI can be wrong. Sometimes it is confidently wrong. Please treat what it says as one careful opinion, not the last word.
• What they tell you is information. It is not medical, legal, financial, investment, or tax advice, and it doesn’t replace a doctor, lawyer, accountant, or financial advisor.
• The decisions are yours, and so are the results — including what you do with your money. For anything that matters, talk to the right professional.
• They are not emergency services and cannot call 911.
• Where a product suggests everyday activities — moving a little, stepping outside, a recipe, a small outing — it suggests and you decide. Check with your doctor before starting new physical activity, go at your own pace, skip anything that doesn’t feel right, and if you leave home, tell someone. You are responsible for your own safety and for how you use what a product suggests, and you accept the risks that come with an activity or an outing you choose. To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for injury or loss that comes from following a suggestion.
• Where a product gives you its read on a message, letter, bill, or caller, that is an opinion, not a guarantee. When real money is involved, check with the organization directly using a number you already trust. The final decision on any message, payment, or link is yours, and so is responsibility for your money.
• We improve our products all the time, and now and then we replace or retire a feature. If we retire something that matters to how you use a product, we’ll tell you first.

Fair use, and closing accounts

• Don’t use Lamplight products to break the law, harm others, or probe or overload the services.
• Don’t try to make the AI say harmful things, and don’t feed it other people’s private information without their permission.
• Don’t resell our products, share one account among many people, or pull from them with automated tools.
• We can suspend or close an account that breaks these rules, or that we reasonably believe is being used for fraud. Where we can, we’ll tell you why and give you a chance to explain.
• If we close your account for misuse, we don’t refund the rest of that billing period.
• If we ever close a service, you’ll get notice and time to take your content with you.

No promises we can’t keep

We work hard to make our products accurate, reliable, and safe. But we can’t promise they will always be available, free of errors, or right. To the extent the law allows, they are provided “as is” and “as available,” with no warranties of any kind, spoken or implied. That includes any implied promise that they fit a particular purpose. Nothing here takes away rights the law says can’t be taken away.

Limits on what we owe you

To the fullest extent the law allows:

• Our total liability to you for any claim, of any kind, is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.
• We aren’t liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost money, lost data, or lost profits — however they arise.
• That includes money lost to a scam or fraud, even if one of our products looked at the message, letter, or caller first.
• These limits protect Lamplight and the people and companies that help us run our products.

Nothing in this section limits liability the law says can’t be limited.

If your actions cause us a claim

If you break these terms, break the law while using our products, or add content you had no right to add, and someone brings a claim against Lamplight because of it, you agree to cover our reasonable costs, including legal fees. We’ll tell you promptly about any such claim.

If we have a disagreement

We’d much rather fix a problem than argue about it. Here is how disagreements work.

• Talk to us first. Email support@uselamplight.com with your account email, what went wrong, and what would make it right. We’ll work with you in good faith for 30 days. Most problems end here.
• Small claims court is always open to you. If your claim fits in small claims court, you can bring it there instead of arbitration — and so can we.
• Otherwise, arbitration — one person at a time. If 30 days pass and we still disagree, either of us can start binding arbitration with the American Arbitration Association (AAA) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules. A neutral arbitrator decides the claim instead of a judge or jury, and there is no appeal in the usual sense. By agreeing to these terms, you and Lamplight each give up the right to have such a claim decided in court by a judge or a jury, except in small claims court as described above. Hearings can happen by phone or video, or near where you live. AAA’s consumer rules cap what you pay in fees, and we cover the rest. The Federal Arbitration Act governs this part of our agreement.
• No class actions. Claims are brought individually — not as a class action, a group claim, or on behalf of others. If a court finds this rule can’t be enforced for a particular claim, that claim goes to court, and the rest of this section still applies.
• If many people bring the same claim. If 25 or more members bring similar claims against us with the same lawyers, or lawyers working together, AAA’s Mass Arbitration Supplementary Rules apply. The claims are heard in batches of 25, one batch at a time, with one arbitrator for each batch, and filing fees are due only as each batch begins. While a claim waits for its batch, any deadline for bringing it is paused. If a court decides this paragraph can’t be enforced for a claim, that claim goes to court.
• You can opt out. If you’d rather not arbitrate, email support@uselamplight.com within 30 days of first accepting these terms. Say “I opt out of arbitration” and include the email address on your account. We’ll reply to confirm, and opting out changes nothing else about your account.
• New Jersey law applies. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey and the United States. Any claim that goes to court is heard in New Jersey, unless the law where you live gives you the right to a court closer to home.

For members in New Jersey

We are a New Jersey company, and New Jersey law gives you rights that no contract can take away. So that nothing above reads as if it could, here is what does not apply to you if you live in New Jersey:

• The limits in “Limits on what we owe you” don’t limit our liability for personal injury caused by our negligence, or for harm caused by our gross negligence, recklessness, or intentional wrongdoing.
• “No promises we can’t keep” doesn’t take away the promise, which New Jersey law implies, that we will provide our products with reasonable care and skill.
• “If your actions cause us a claim” doesn’t ask you to cover a claim that comes from our own negligence or wrongdoing.
• Nothing here limits the remedies the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act or the Truth-in-Consumer Contract, Warranty and Notice Act give you, including triple damages and attorney’s fees where those laws provide them. An arbitrator can award every remedy a court could.
• The small-claims option, the right to opt out of arbitration, and the rule that a court near you may hear your claim where the law allows all apply in New Jersey exactly as written.

Everything else in these terms applies in New Jersey as written. If you live somewhere else, the laws of your state may give you similar rights, and nothing in these terms takes them away.

A few last things

• If a court finds one part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still stands.
• These terms, with each product’s own terms and our Privacy and Safety pages, are the whole agreement between us about our products.
• If we don’t enforce a rule right away, we haven’t given it up.
• You can’t hand your account to someone else. If Lamplight is ever sold, these terms move with it, and you’ll be told in plain words.

What it costs

• Heirloom is $10 a month, and renews monthly until you cancel.
• Given as a gift, Heirloom is $99 once for a full year — a single payment, not a subscription, good for one year from the day the gift is opened.
• The price on the button is the whole price.

Your book

• Say you’re ready to print, whenever that is, and your whole story is formatted as a finished book, yours to keep. Cancelling never takes it away.
• The permission you give us to run Heirloom includes laying out your book and making the print-ready file you order. The book is yours, and so is every word in it.

How much you can use

• The clean-up helper (reword and polish): 40 uses a day and 150 uses a month.
• Asking for a different question: 20 shuffles a day.
• There is no cap on writing, answering, or adding and tidying photos. Your own words are always enough.
